the problem: the electronic stability program software may prevent the electronic parking brake from being disengaged when returning to the car after parking unless the stability program system is deactivated. if the esp is deactivated while driving, it could increase the risk of a crash.
the fix: dealers will update the stability program software for free.
what owners should do: mercedes-benz began mailing interim letters to owners feb. 14; a second letter will be mailed once remedy parts become available. owners can call the automaker at 800-367-6372, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
