2012-2014 Kia Forte, Forte Koup: Recall Alert

2012-2014 Kia Forte, Forte Koup: Recall Alert
2013 Kia Forte

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 134,000 model-year 2012-14 Kia Forte sedans and hatchbacks and Forte Koup coupes

The Problem: The brake pedal stopper pad may deteriorate, allowing the brakelight switch plunger to remain extended when the brake pedal is released, and the brakelights to remain illuminated. Deterioration can also allow the shift lever to be moved without depressing the brake pedal, or to activate the Used Engine management brake pedal override feature.

If the brakelight switch plunger does not retract when the brake pedal is not being pressed, the brakelights may stay illuminated, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the brake switch plunger is not retracted, the transmission can be shifted out of Park without depressing the brake pedal, also increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the brake pedal stopper pad for free.

What Owners Should Do: Kia will begin notifying owners Jan. 30, 2018. Owners can call the automaker at 800-333-4542, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
