Approximately 515,000 model-year 2007-11 Nissan Versa sedans and model-year 2007-12 Versa hatchbacks
The Problem: The driver frontal airbag inflator may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to moderate absolute humidity, temperatures and temperature cycling. The inflator may rupture, spraying metal fragments into the cabin that could strike the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
This latest action is related to the massive ongoing recall of millions of airbag inflators manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp., which have caused the deaths of a dozen people in the U.S. Earlier this month, Takata announced a new round of recalls targeting 2.7 million older-generation inflators with a desiccant, or drying agent, that was intended to prevent the degradation problem with ammonium-sulfate propellant. All non-desiccated Takata inflators already are part of the previous recall overseen by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration affecting 46 million driver- and front-passenger-side inflators in 29 million vehicles.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the driver frontal airbag inflator with a new one manufactured by a different supplier for free.
What Owners Should Do: Nissan will begin notifying owners by the end of September. Remedy parts were not immediately available, so owners will first receive an interim notification letter, followed by a second letter when parts become available.
