The Problem: Airbag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal airbag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment may rupture in a crash necessitating airbag deployment due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments spewing into the cabin and striking vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

The airbag inflators were manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp. and are part of the massive ongoing recall that has resulted in at least a dozen U.S. deaths. Read more about Mazda's latest Takata recall here.

The Fix: Dealers will replace the front passenger-side airbag inflator with an alternate inflator for free.

What Owners Should Do: Mazda will begin notifying owners today. Owners can call the automaker at 800-222-5500, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
