the problem: the airbag system could experience electrical shorting that could damage the circuits in the system, causing the airbag warning lights to illuminate and the airbags and seat belt pretensioners to become deactivated, or causing those systems to inadvertently deploy. either condition can increase the risk of injury or a crash.

the fix: dealers will replace the airbag control unit with an improved one for free.

what owners should do: scion manufacturer toyota will begin notifying owners by first-class mail in late december. owners can call the automaker at 800-331-4331, the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
